Team India became the joint record holders for the most number of captains played in a single calendar year when Shikhar Dhavan captained for team India for the west Indies Series. India has achieved the feat with 4 months left for the year to end. Sri Lanka was the only team who played 7 captains in a single year which was in 2017.
Teams with the most captains in a single year.
6 captains: Zimbabwe, 2001
6 captains: England, 2011
6 captains: Australia, 2021
7 captains: Sri Lanka, 2017
7 captains: India in 2022*
Let’s have a look at the performances of the captains of team India in the record-setting year 2022.
1) KL Rahul :
The year 2022 Started with the second test of India tour of South Africa series in which KL Rahul was given captainship after India won the 1st test match under the captainship of Virat Kohli that was played between India and South Africa between December 26 – 30, 2021, at the centurion.
Unfortunately, in the 1st Match of the year, 2022 India started with a loss under the captainship of KL Rahul as South Africa won the test match by 7 wickets.
Being the opening batsman alongside Mayank Agarwal they managed to score a partnership of just 36 runs in 86 balls out of which KL Rahul contributed only 9 runs of 49 balls. Similar was the story of the second innings where KL Rahul scored only 8 runs of 21 balls which meant we weren’t able to build a partnership at the start of both innings.
After this loss captainship was again handed back to Virat Kohli for the 3rd Test.
Now comes the One day Series in South Africa which KL Rahul would definitely want to forget as it gave him a record that no captain would want against his name and that is, KL Rahul has become the first Indian to lose the first three ODIs as a captain.
Now some good news for KL Rahul as he has managed to captain team India to a 3-0 win in the India tour of Zimbabwe 2022.
2 ) Virat Kohli :
After the first test, Virat Kohli took over the captainship for the 3rd test as he was fit to play again as he had injured himself during the 1st test and was unable to play for the second test. Being the only Test before he stepped down as the captain ended in a loss.
There were multiple reasons surrounding the stepping down of Kohli as the captain however Kohli always believed that there should be a single captain across all formats hence he decided to step down and give others a chance.
3) Rishabh Pant :
Rishabh Pant has given a good comeback after his two losses in the first two T20‘s played in South Africa tour of India 2022. India lost the first T20 by 7 wickets and the second by 4 wickets. This was where Rishabh Pant showed composure and dint buckle under pressure, he went on the win the next two T20 matches comfortably by 48 and 82 runs respectively.
4) Jasprit Bumrah :
Bumrah having been given a rare chance to lead team India as Rohit Sharma hadn’t recovered from Covid 19 did reasonably well being his first match as a captain. Having scored a quick 31 not out of 16 balls took India to score past 400. Having scored 400+ runs in the first innings and getting England out for 284, Bumrah couldn’t handle the pressure of India getting all out for 245. He went really defensive in his approach and tried to get a draw, things could have been different if would have been a little aggressive in his approach to put England under pressure tan playing defensive cricket.
5) Rohit Sharma :
Being one of the most tenured captains of 2020 has lived up to the Faith the management has in him. He has multiple wins under his belt during his career as a captain and 2022 has been no different. Starting the India tour of England 2022 with T20s, under Rohit’s leadership, India beat England 2 – 1 convincingly in the three T20 matches. In the 1st match, India beat them by 50 and the second T20 by 49 runs and then losing to England by 17 runs. The one-day series was no different result-wise as India beat England 2 -1 in the 3 match series. Then came the India tour of West Indies, Having captained for four out of five T20 matches he managed to win three out of them.
With the Asia cup starting in a few days with the experienced captain Rohit Sharma leading the team there are really good chances of India going real ahead in the competition.
6) Hardik Pandya :
Taking the Gujarat Titans to their Debut IPL win Hardik has a lot of confidence backing him up as a captain. He makes smarts with the bowling and is aggressive in his approach which has given him two out of two wins against Ireland as a captain. India won both the T20s that were played in Dublin however the second win was a close one as India won by only 4 runs with Ireland having 5 wickets to spare. No doubt Ireland is a good team however need to see his performance as captain when there are more experienced teams than Ireland. He also took the responsibility to lead India in the 5th and final T20 against West Indies and won that comfortably by 88 runs
7) Shikhar Dhawan :
Shikhar Dhawan (35 years and 225 days) has set a new record by being the oldest Indian to make an ODI captaincy debut. He has managed to keep a clean record yet for the 2022 campaign by winning all the three One day matches which he has led India on the tour against West Indies.
